Zorotypus (Octozoros)
Eight-Segmented Zorapterans
Michael S. EngelThis tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.
The root of the current tree connects the organisms featured in this tree to their containing group and the rest of the Tree of Life. The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.

close boxIntroduction
The extinct subgenus Octozoros includes two middle Cretaceous species, both known from alates in Burmese amber (Engel and Grimaldi, 2002; Engel, 2003).
The Burmese amber species Zorotypus cretatus may belong to Octozoros but the holotype is too imperfectly preserved to permit definitive placement here. The species is, therefore, retained as incertae sedis within Zorotypus s.l.
Characteristics
The subgenus Octozoros can be recognized by the following suite of apomorphic traits (Engel, 2003):
- antenna reduced to eight segments
- jugate setae present along posterior margin of forewing
- empodium of meta-pretarsus strong and slightly expanded
