Pseudocalea
Pseudocalea brevicornis
Christian Maus and James S. Ashe (1947-2005)Introduction
Pseudocalea is represented by a single species P. brevicornis which occurrs in Southeastern Europe, Italy and Austria. This species has previously been included in the genera Ocyota or Euryalea by various authors.
Characteristics
Among members of the subtribe Aleocharina Pseudocalea is characterized by a relatively elongate and narrow body, long slender legs, tibiae without spines, partially carinate mesosternum and pronotal hypomera distinctly visible in lateral aspect.
Within the subtribe Aleocharina members of Pseudocalea are most similar to, and may be confused with, members of Aleochara and Ocyota. Pseudocalea can be distinguished from Aleochara by the lack of pro- and mesotibial spines and the structure of the hypomera, and from Ocyota by distinct microsculpture on the forebody, less transverse head, smaller eyes, the partially carinate mesosternum and other characteristics (ASSING & WUNDERLE 1997). Pseudocalea was recently revised by ASSING & WUNDERLE (1997).
Bionomics
Pseudocalea brevicornis is apparently a nidicolous species in the nests of moles (Talpa europaea and T. romana), though specimens are occasionally found in caves and forest litter (ASSING & WUNDERLE 1997).
